Traditional SEO gives you familiar numbers such as clicks, impressions and average position. AI answers are different. There is no single “you rank number three” result that stays the same everywhere.
GEO needs a repeated test, not one ranking number
GEO does not have one universal positional metric that behaves like a traditional keyword rank. A practical measurement approach is to test a fixed set of buyer- and seller-intent questions on a schedule, then record business mentions, linked citations, competing businesses and identifiable referral visits. Technical teams can also review crawler activity. Because answers can vary by platform, wording, location and time, the useful result is a trend under reasonably consistent conditions—not a single screenshot.
In Plain English
That does not make AI visibility impossible to measure. It changes the questions you ask.
Are you being mentioned when someone asks a realistic buyer or seller question? Does the answer include a link to your website? Which agents or companies appear when you do not? Do any of those AI platforms send visitors who contact you?
The key is consistency. Use the same useful questions each month and look for a pattern. One answer can change from one session to the next. A trend across several months is more meaningful.
Four Things Worth Tracking
Keep the scorecard simple enough that you will actually repeat it.
Mentions
Create a list of realistic questions buyers and sellers ask before choosing an agent. Check whether your business is named as a relevant option.
Citations
Being named is useful. Being named with a link to your website is even more useful. Record which page is cited so you can see what content is being selected.
Who appears instead
Note the agents, brokerages and websites that appear when you do not. This shows the comparison set more clearly than checking your own name alone.
Referral visits
Use your website analytics to look for identifiable visits from AI platforms. Track the landing page and whether the visitor completed a form, called or booked an appointment.
Run the check monthly, not daily. A short panel of 10 to 20 genuine questions is more manageable than a giant spreadsheet that nobody maintains.
How can the monthly test be made more consistent?
This section is optional. The four measurements above are enough for a basic monthly check.
- Record the exact question, platform and date. Small wording changes can produce different answers, so keep a simple test log.
- Note the location used for local questions. A recommendation for “an agent near me” can depend on geographic context.
- Use crawl activity as a diagnostic, not an outcome. Server logs can show that a recognized crawler reached a page, but a visit does not prove that the page was mentioned or cited.
- Use Search Console and Analytics for what they can show. Google Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report for impressions in Google Search AI features. Google Analytics also has an AI Assistant channel for recognized referrals from services such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. These reports still do not create one universal rank across every AI platform.
The Takeaway
AI visibility is not one fixed rank. It is a pattern made up of mentions, citations, competing recommendations and actual website visits.
